BREXIT : No-Deal Measures For UK Nationals

1. Austria   

Like all European citizens living in Austria, UK citizens who are already in Austria have already made 2 formalities in Austria:  R esidence registration ( Meldezettel ) and European registration ( EU-Anmeldebescheinigung ). In the event of a  no-deal Brexit, UK citizens will need to apply for a residence / work permit (called Red-White-Red Plus card) within 6 months. 2. Belgium 

The Belgian Government has taken legislative action in the United Kingdom. This legislative act will only be reached in the absence of a treaty by the parliament. It relates to the most important and urgent issues. Belgium has chosen to reside in the United Kingdom and is residing in Belgium at the time of withdrawal. The existing rights of residence will be prolonged after the 29th of March 2019 until the 31st of December 2020 , in which  nothing much will change  for British  residing in Belgium at the time of withdrawal.  –  Expat Management Group 


3. Bulgaria

If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, UK nationals and their families currently residing in Bulgaria will have the opportunity to maintain their current status. A special procedure of reregistration (” preregistratsia “) will be introduced by Dec. 31, 2020. UK nationals and their family members will need to submit their applications in person at the Migration Office or at one of the local police stations. 4. Croatia

UK citizens and their families in the Republic of Croatia are highly recommended to register their residence as a member of the family. Once applicants complete the registration of temporary residence in the United States of America (OG, 66/2019) they will be issued with a Registration Certificate (” Potvrda  o  prijavi privremenog boravka  “In a paper form, free of charge or if they wish, they can apply for a residence card. Family members of UK nationals, who are not nationals of a Member State, are resident at the residence card. 5. Cyprus

The scope of the law covers UK nationals and their family members residing in Cyprus prior to 31st October 2019 UK nationals and their family members, who have lawfully and continuously resided in Cyprus for a period of 5 years prior to 31st October 2019, have a right of permanent residence in Cyprus.  UK nationals who reside in Cyprus, but have not yet accumulated the 5-year period of continuous and lawful residence by 31st October 2019, have a right to acquire permanent residency. 6. Czechia

I f there’s a no-deal  Brexit,   the allowded Currently Held by UK nationals in the Czech Republic Will Remain valid until the end of 2020. It is therefore highly Advisable to obtenir residence certificates for EU citizens for all UK citoyens living in the Czech Republic As soon as possible , it  would be possible to allow them to stay in the Czech Republic until the end of 2020 in a case of a no-deal  Brexit . If  there is a no-deal  Brexit scenario, British citizens will by default  be  third country nationals. The possibility of a permanent right of residence in Denmark will depend on national rules applicable to third countries. The Danish Aliens Act will then apply from the withdrawal date, unless the Danish Government decides against it. The Danish Brexit Act safeguards that British citizens and their family members have the right to reside in Denmark. The Danish Brexit Act furthermore ensures that British citizens are residing in an EU- / EEA Member State  other    than Denmark or in the United Kingdom on the withdrawal date, and who meets the requirements for being an employee or a self-employed person, will continue to have the right to work in Denmark.  –  Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Integration – Denmark 



The transition period will last until 29th March 2019 until 31 December 2020. Until the end of the transition period, the United States will remain in the UK. UK citizens residing in Estonia do not need to take any further steps so far. It is recommended that UK citizens make sure that their place of residence in the registries should be up to date. It is also important to renew their ID card if it has expired. Starting in April 2021, the Aliens Act will apply to citizens of the UK arriving in Estonia, and they will have to apply to the Police and Border Guard for a residence permit similarly to other third-country nationals. 9. Finland 

All British citizens currently living / working in Finland should register their residence as EU citizens. This should be done before the 31st of October. The Finnish parliament passed a special act on UK citizens’ right of residence. The special act entered into force on 30 March 2019. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, it will apply from the date on which the UK withdraws from the EU without an agreement. Under the special act, UK citizens who are living in Finland and who have registered their right to residence in the country and receive social security benefits until the end of 2020. UK citizens who arrive after Brexit day or have not registered their residence. In the event of a deal, the withdrawal agreement should guarantee the same rights for UK citizens until the end of the transition period. 10. France

According to the decree of April 2019, the French Prime Minister has declared that British nationals residing in France must obtain a residency in the 6 months following Brexit, which is currently scheduled for October 31, 2019.  During the yearlong transitional period foll owing Brexit, British nationals will have to fit into the most appropriate immigration category, including the 10-year residency card,  employee , visitor,  or  entrepreneur. British nationals must be obtained within the context of Brexit. –  Expat Partners 


11. Germany  

The entry of UK nationals in Germany will be possible for short stays (90 days within a 180-day period) also in the event of a withdrawal from the EU by the UK without a deal. The EU has introduced a legal instrument that provides for mutual visa-free travel. In the event of a withdrawal from the EU without a deal, the German Government will have a transition to the UK. They will be allowed to retain their status in the UK or German citizenship if the decision on their citizenship is made after the withdrawal and that they are all pre-requisites for citizenship are before Brexit. 12. Greece

For short stay / business  travelers , a no-deal Brexit May lead to delays and inconvenience  due to  additional checks by providing good information on the purpose and duration of stay, as well as proof of  enough  means clustering of Living During the stay. 13. Hungary

Hungary is currently operating a registration system for EU citizens, including British nationals, under the provisions of Act I of 2007 on Entry and Stay of Persons with the Right to Free Movement and Residence. They can obtain a certificate of registration and after five years of residence, a permanent residence card. For third country national members of residence, residence card. 14. Ireland

Presently nobody is certain of what the outcome of Brexit will be. As the registration process in the Common Travel Areas (CTA) for EU nationals in the UK excludes Irish nationals, the same reciprocal relationships are expected to remain in place wherever possible. All UK passport holders do not require any registration formalities and they can live and work as they have to date. 15. Italy

British citizens legally residing in Italy and their NON-EU family members can, within December 31, 2020:  

  • if at the date of  Brexit  you have regularly resided in Italy (Directive 2003/109 / EC); 
  • if at the time of  Brexit  you-have Regularly resided in Italy for less than 5 years, you can apply for a residence permit “for residency” ( “per  residenza “), valid 5 years.

16. Latvia

Latvia to the United States and their family members who have a document issued in Latvia to confirm their right to reside (registration certificate, permanent residency card or residence permit) to submit an application in a free format and a copy of the valid travel document. The UK citizen can send their application by post, electronically (secure electronic signature is required), or submit it personally to any regional office of the OCMA. Citizens of the UK and their family members who do not have a document issued in Latvia confirming their right to reside must submit the application, attaching documents to their employment, study or self-employment in Latvia for at least six months – starting from 1 October 2018. After 29 March 2019, Each citizen of the United Kingdom, who receives a document confirming the right to reside in Latvia, will be sent a letter explaining the procedure for obtaining a copy of the document. 17. Lithuania

Lithuanian authorities have already passed  several  laws in order to ensure that the country has a poor reputation. From the day the UK, the UK nationals, residents of Lithuania prior to Brexit, and their family members have 9 months to apply for a new Lithuanian residency permit ,  which  will  be free of charge. The residence document, issued in the United Kingdom, will be considered as the temporary residence of the  9-month  transitional period. 18. Luxembourg

20. Netherlands

23. Romania 

The Romanian government has not officially confirmed the following Brexit plans .  Nevertheless,  UK nationals along With Their families, Who-have a Registration Certificate Issued  before  Brexit day Will receive a letter  qui  act s  as a national temporary residence permit . The Resident Permit holds a  valid ity of  nine months from  the Romanian government. UK nationals, and their family members, who will have entered Romania before Brexit day but do not have a registration certificate   Those who have submitted a registration form to  the first three  months after Brexit will also receive a letter that will act as a temporary national residence permit, valid for  up to  nine months after Brexit .  Nationals of the UK living  in Romania  are required  for a new status, transitioning to the regime for third-country nationals, under a few  conditions. 24. Slovakia

UK citizens and their family members who have registered residence in Slovakia for longer than 5 years before the Brexit date (have registered before 31  October 2014) will be able to obtain long-term residence in the interest of the Slovak Republic . 25. Slovenia

26. Spain

27. Sweden

28. Switzerland
