Thailand COVID – 19 Update
The immigration authorities in Thailand have confirmed that they will no longer issued Visa on Arrival to Chinese nationals, who should instead obtain a health certificate, apply for a visa at a Thai consulate and then obtain an updated health certificate to be presented to the Thai immigration authorities at the airport on arrival in Thailand.
Unfortunately, the Thai consulates in China have not received this policy update from Thailand and are still advising applicants to apply for electronic Visa on Arrival, and not offering paper tourist visa applications in China.
Effective 12 March, foreign nationals arriving in Thailand will need to download an Airports of Thailand mobile app to provide information about themselves and where they will be staying. The government will allow a 7‐day visa extension period for tourist visa holders who are currently in Thailand. Longer extensions will be at the discretion of the local authority.
The Board of Investment (BOI) has declared the following countries “restricted”: China, Macau, Hong Kong, South Korea, Iran, Italy, Japan, France, Germany, Taiwan. Nationals of these restricted countries must wait 14 days from the date of their arrival in Thailand before submitting an online work permit application to the BOI. Applications take 5‐10 days for processing, so new arrivals from restricted countries will have to wait at least 3‐4 weeks after entering Thailand before receiving their Digital Work Permit and long‐term visa. The Employment Department and Immigration Bureau consider the same countries to be restricted, as well as Singapore. The Employment Department will accept applications from nationals of the restricted countries, or other nationals who have visited the restricted countries in the previous 14 days, if the applications are made by an authorized representative of the foreign applicant holding a power of attorney.
Upon receipt of the work permit booklet the authorized representative can bring the work permit booklet to the foreign applicant for signature at home while such person remains in self‐imposed quarantine. The Immigration Bureau requests that nationals of the restricted countries, and other nationals who have visited the restricted countries in the previous 14 days, do NOT file visa applications within 14‐days of arrival, except if their visa will expire.
